CCSD Taking Precautionary Steps Following Canvas Security Incident

Posted Date: 05/08/26 (10:18 AM)

Parents/Families/Staff:

The Citrus County School District is making you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the provider of the Canvas Learning Management System used by many educational organizations nationwide.

Canvas (Instructure) has indicated the information involved is limited to basic user details, such as name and email address. The company has implemented additional security measures in response.  As an added precaution, Citrus County School District has temporarily disabled access to Canvas while we work to ensure student information remains secure and uncompromised.
We are actively monitoring the situation and working with our technology team and partners to evaluate any potential impact.

At this time, no action is required by students, families, or staff.  Citrus County School District has existing technical safeguards in place that significantly limit student email communication from outside, non-district entities. These safeguards help reduce exposure to phishing attempts, spam, or unsolicited contact, even in the event of a third-party vendor security incident.

Our priority is the security and privacy of our students and staff. We appreciate your patience and understanding and we will share additional information when available.  Graphic announcing 'DISTRICT TECHNOLOGY UPDATE' with social media icons.

Dear Families and Students,

We are pleased to share that Canvas access has been restored and is once again available for student and staff use.

As we continue taking careful steps to protect student and staff data, some background system integrations will remain temporarily limited. During this time, families and students may notice occasional delays with course updates or certain third-party tools connected through Canvas.

Our technology team is closely monitoring the situation and will fully restore all integrations as soon as it is safe to do so.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue working to keep our systems secure.
