What inspired you to pursue a career in public safety?

I was inspired to pursue a career in public safety to provide a better future for my family. Having grown up in challenging circumstances, with several family members involved in the criminal justice system, I was determined to break that cycle. I chose a path that my wife and children could be proud of, and it reflects the values I strive to model for them every day.

Why did you choose the Citrus County Public Safety Training Center?

I chose the Citrus County Public Safety Training Center not only for its strong reputation for discipline and professionalism, but also because it is close to where I was raised. After returning from serving in the military, I knew I wanted to serve a community close to home. The academy’s focus on real-world application, accountability, and high standards was exactly the kind of training environment I was looking for. I wanted to be challenged and prepared the right way, and I felt this program would equip me to serve effectively.

The Academy Experience

What was the most challenging part of the Academy?

The most challenging part of the academy was managing everything at once—the physical demands, the academic expectations, and the constant need to stay mentally sharp. The coursework required focus, and the scenario-based training pushed you to think clearly and make decisions under pressure. At the same time, I was balancing academy responsibilities with raising a family, and life problems everyone deals with.

How did the training prepare you for real-world situations?

The academy’s scenario-based exercises, defensive tactics, firearms training, and legal instruction provided a strong foundation. Instructors consistently reinforced the importance of officer discretion, sound judgment, and effective communication skills that are essential in real-world encounters.

Was there a specific lesson or instructor that made a lasting impact?

Corporal Mickey Dixon and Deputy Thomas Beagan both made a lasting impact on me during the academy and later while serving alongside them as a deputy sheriff. Their professionalism and command presence reinforced the importance of officer safety and sound decision-making. What stood out most was that there was no difference between what they taught in the academy and how they conducted themselves on the job. Their passion for the profession and positive attitude set the example I continue to follow throughout my career.

Career Growth & Impact

Where are you currently working and what is your role?

I am currently serving with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office as the Law Enforcement Bureau Commander. My role involves providing oversight of all law enforcement operations within Citrus County.

What has been your proudest professional accomplishment so far?

My proudest professional accomplishment was being selected by Sheriff Vincent to oversee law enforcement operations and earning the trust of both the people I work with and the community. Whether handling a high-risk call professionally or taking extra time to assist a citizen in need, those moments reinforce why I chose this career.

How did your Academy training help during a critical moment in the job?

I remember the first foot pursuit I was involved in. I was chasing a suspect with a felony warrant in Homosassa. During the pursuit, the suspect suddenly stopped, turned toward me, and grabbed my shirt. I had to use the leg sweep and cuffing techniques I learned in the academy. I remember thinking that only a few months earlier, I had been on the DT mats practicing those same techniques.

Words to Future Recruits

What advice would you give someone considering the Academy?

Take it seriously from day one. Develop discipline, physical fitness, and strong study habits before you arrive. Stay humble and coachable. The Law Enforcement Academy does not make you a complete law enforcement officer; it is only a basic introduction to a complex and dangerous career. It is up to the individual to continue developing through ongoing education, training, and experience.

In one sentence, how did CCPSTC shape your career?

CCPSTC shaped my career by developing the foundation of discipline, confidence, and professionalism that I rely on every day in this profession.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE CITRUS COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING CENTER AT WTC?

I moved to the area from Kentucky and didn’t have any prior knowledge of the academies nearby. After hearing positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations, I decided to look into this one.
